Physical Education
Mr. Vine began teaching in 2004. He previously taught 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade within IPSD204, most recently at the STEM School before coming to Spring Brook.
He received his bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science from Northern Illinois University while also completing graduate work in Exercise Physiology. He then went on to get masters degrees in Elementary Education from Aurora University and in Instructional Technology from the American College of Education. He holds teaching endorsements in physical education and health education and is a certified strength and conditioning specialist.
When not in the classroom, Mr. Vine enjoys coaching baseball/softball, officiating, and staying committed to an active lifestyle with his wife, three kids, and their houseful of pets. It was through his passion for coaching that lead him into teaching.

Kindergarten
- Learn and practice locomotor movements (walk, run, skip, gallop, hop, jump, leap, slide)
- Manipulative skills: throwing, catching, striking, kicking, dribbling and volleying using various equipment
- Low-organized movement games – games will use the various locomotors with an emphasis on raising the heart rate and moving safely in open space
- Basic Gymnastics/tumbling skills will be introduced
- Basic fitness skills will be introduced in K. 1st grade will be tested in the spring for the first time. Results will not be sent home until 2nd grade.
- Rhythm and dance
- Healthy heart concepts will be introduced through JRFH and heart adventure
1st Grade

2nd Grade
- Refine locomotor movements (walk, run, skip, gallop, hop, jump, slide, leap)
- Manipulative Skills: throwing, catching, striking, kicking, dribbling, and volleying using various equipment.
- Low-organized movement games – games will practice the various locomotor movements while working on aerobic endurance and safe movement. Students will begin to learn/understand the changes that are taking place while exercising (heart beats faster, breathing is faster, body is hotter-need for water)
- Gymnastics/tumbling skills are continued including: balance beam, vault, and rope climbing
- Rhythm/Dance is continued
- Physical Fitness testing becomes a fall and spring event. Results will be sent home to parents. Students are tested in 4 areas:
- Endurance – Pacer run and ½ mile run
- Muscular Strength/endurance – Curl-ups and push-ups
- Flexibility – Sit and Reach
- Healthy Concepts are reinforced – nutrition and heart healthy living are taught through JRFH and heart adventure
3rd Grade
- Introduction to team sports while working on basic skills that relate to each sport through drills and modified games. An emphasis on good sportsmanship and “If you had fun, you won!” approach will be used. Sports included are: volleyball, basketball, flag football or soccer, floor hockey, and softball or track and field.
- Rhythm and Dance is included with an introduction to partner dances
- Gymnastics/tumbling is progressing with the grade level
- Health Concepts – muscle groups are introduced, nutrition, and heart healthy lifestyle choices are discussed, heart rate is introduced
- Cooperative Games/team building activities are introduced
- Physical Fitness is the same as second – testing in the fall and spring
4th Grade
- Team sports are continued; basic skills are practiced in small group format prior to playing the sport. Strategies will be discussed with an emphasis on good sportsmanship. An “if you had fun, you won” approach will be used. Sports included are: flag football or soccer, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, and softball or track and field.
- After School Intramurals will be offered through-out the year. Stay tuned to the website for details
- Rhythm and Dance - a combination of line dance, partner dance and country-western dance is included
- Gymnastics/tumbling is progressing with the grade level.
- Health Concepts – muscle groups, circulatory system, nutrition, and heart healthy lifestyles are discussed, and heart rate is counted and checked.
- Cooperative/team building games are reinforced
- Physical Fitness is continued twice a year with students setting goals in the fall. Students are tested on 4 areas:
- C-V endurance - pacer run and ¾ mile run
- Muscular Strength/Endurance – push-up and curl-up test
- Flexibility – Sit and Reach test
Written quizzes will be included on fitness concepts and heart concepts.
5th Grade
- Team sports are continued in 5th grade. Sport skills are practiced, strategies are discussed and games are played with modified rules. An emphasis on good sportsmanship, trying your best and “if you had fun, you won” approach is continued. Sports included are: flag football or soccer, volleyball, basketball, floor hockey, and softball or track and field.
- After School intramurals will be offered through -out the year. Stay tuned to the website for more details.
- Rhythms and Dance - Emphasis will be placed on students working in small groups to create a 32 count dance, using skills taught in previous years or dance moves they know.
- Gymnastics and tumbling – will continue with harder skills introduced and combinations of skills put together to form routines
- Health Concepts – Nutrition, circulatory system, and healthy lifestyles are continued with more emphasis on the dangers of smoke and drugs, heart rate is counted and tested. Cognitive tests will be given to students on fitness concepts and heart healthy living.
- Physical Fitness – Fitness Gram will be used starting in 5th grade and continuing through high school. Computerized results will be sent home in the Fall and Spring. Tests will include: push-ups, curl-ups, sit and reach, pacer run, and the 1 mile endurance run.
