District 204 ELL Program
ELL stands for English Language Learning program. Students who speak another language or who come from a home where another language is spoken can both qualify for ELL services. All students who attend a district 204 school are required to fill out registration information including a document entitled a Home Language Survey. If the Home Language Survey indicates the presence of another language in a student's home, the student's language proficiency is required to be assessed using one of two assessments, the Kindergarten Screener (Gr. K-1) or the WIDA Online Screener (Gr. 1-5). These assessments look at students' English language proficiency in the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. The students' overall score determines whether or not they qualify for ELL services. Students qualify for ELL services if their overall score is below 4.8.
Once a student qualifies for ELL services, our goal is to develop both their social and academic English language proficiency in the domains of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students' language proficiency is developed through grade-appropriate curriculum and academic content. For more information about our district's ELL program, please visit: IPSD ELL Program
