3 Teams of 4 Crone 8th graders competed this November against many other teams from schools around the area at the NFPA Challenge. The NFPA or National Fluid Power Association Challenge was a STEM event where students were presented with an engineering design challenge. They had 2 months to design and test a machine to lift "toxic" cylinders from one area and deposit them in another without dropping them. The students used hydraulics in the form of syringes as the power behind the movement. Students went to the competition with their tools and their design and had 3 hours to build their machines from scratch using the materials provided before testing at 1 PM.
There were 5 awards given out: Best Team Work, Best Portfolio, Best Design, Highest Score in Competition, and Best Over All. One Crone team: Sean Fu, Michael Han, Kyle Domingos, and Akshay Dugar took Best Over All and received the biggest trophy.
